Not *Not* Gnomes

About the work.
Not *Not* Gnomes is an ode to the eclectic neighbourhood that surrounds Bellwoods Park, Toronto, and is a reflection of the energy and people who call it home. Walk a few streets away from the park and you’ll find houses that have stood the test of time against urbanization and gentrification. Chain link fences, overgrown gardens, and kitschy decor are staples of Bellwoods Park and play an integral role in shaping the community’s identity.
Bellwoods Park is the gathering place for Toronto up-and-comers. Friends meet to spend time in “nature” and share stories over local sour beers and overpriced oat milk lattes. As I sat in the park one Sunday, I couldn’t help but notice the recently renovated homes surrounding it - and the young, hip families that inhabit them. In contrast to their nearby, established neighbours, these families were at the beginning of their home’s story. Most hadn’t even laid out a ceremonial welcome mat. And this is when the collection was inspired.
The collection is cheekily named after spending the last year holding on to the best, worst kept secret around. As a backdrop for colour and pattern, the iconic garden gnome presents a new artistic challenge - where the physical reality of the gnome is merely a creative platform for the artwork that illuminates them.
